I've been shooting panoramic photos for 25+ years. I feel that the wider field of view better recalls the feeling of being at a specific place at a specific time; it's closer to what I saw when I was there.
By shooting multiple photos and stitching them together, I end up with a larger pixel-count than I would have gotten from single shot with a wide-angle lens. This means I can make much larger prints and still maintain a high DPI and level of detail.
